Why You Should Stop Using Toxic Aluminum Filled Deodorants, and Use Natural Products Instead.

Life is about sharing knowledge and on this blog, that is what I intend to do.
My Boyfriend is a naturalist, now I’ve always considered myself to be a naturalist but being with him, I’ve learned so much more about natural living.
One thing that I have stopped using since we began dating is conventional antiperspirant deodorants. Now, deodorant is a life staple; there is no way to live without using some form of deodorant. At least in my world. I am not the most active person but I do try to get in at least a 10-minute walk each day. Also, I live in the warmest of places. Saying this to say; deodorant is a must.
When my boyfriend suggested that I should stop using the deodorant I had, I wasn’t too hesitant because I like to be informed and try new things. However, I did not take his word as my all and end all. I quickly ran to my favorite place #google to do my own research. Here is what I found out:

What is wrong with conventional deodorant?
The Ingredients
The major problem with conventional antiperspirant deodorants is the ingredients. Most of these deodorants contain:
Aluminum– This is a metal and it is used in conventional antiperspirant deodorants to stop perspiration completely. What this does is basically close up your pores/ sweat glands.
Your body is made to sweat. Sweating is how your body releases toxins. Many people don’t want to sweat because they think sweat smells. In actuality, sweat is just a mixture of salt and water. What causes body order is when that sweat is mixed with natural bacteria.
The beauty is all of this is that a natural deodorant will ultimately change the reaction so you will definitely not smell.
To take this a step further, there have been claims that aluminum is tied to a number of health issues. Feel free to read more here.
Fragrance- Fragrance in conventional deodorants is a basically a fancy way of saying phthalates. I say this because phthalates are the substance that is used to dissolve raw materials when making a fragrance. This product can be found in many of the things you use daily such as makeup, perfumes, plastic objects, flooring materials, toys, wall covering and much more. Some people have linked this chemical to health issues (please read more here) and early onset puberty.
There are many other ingredients in conventional deodorants, many that I Don’t know and cannot even pronounce. For this, I apply a rule that my boyfriend has: If I don’t know what it is then I don’t want to use it.

We live and we learn, as we learn we should make better choices.

Another issue with conventional deodorants is they may cause body rashes or skin issues.

  • Many people are allergic to the chemicals in these deodorants and don’t know it.
  • Because the chemicals like aluminum clog your pores, your body may react in bumps or just be irritated. This can increase the likelihood of razor bumps or burns.

Better Choices
In my home, we use the product that I showed you above.
My honest opinion is I love that stuff. I apply it with my fingers and it keeps me fresh. At first, I did have an issue with how oily it felt but that quickly went away. I’ve had it for maybe 3 months or more and I still have 3/4 left so it’s definitely worth the bucks (which is not much). Feel free to purchase this particular one, if you can find it at a later date. It is currently unavailable (12-7-18).
Alternatively;  The same company has a stick version. This might be great for those of you who do not want to use your fingers.

Now, I’ve been trying to get my mom to switch for a few weeks now, so I am hoping this post will inspire her and you too.
Now if this was stuff you already know and practice don’t hesitate to state that in the comments along with any other tips you may have. This will help to motivate others.
If you are gonna give it a try let me know as well.
Until next time. Love, Light, and Peace.

  1. Wow! I knew deodorants had chemicals but I didn’t realize it was that bad. Do you know if these natural choices work for athletes? I run at least 20 miles a week and get pretty gross. Thank for your thoughts!

    1. Yeah I didn’t either, but better late than never. And I really wasn’t sure about this so I did some research; I’m seeing that Piperwai natural organic deodorant is good as well as soapwalla deodorant cream. I will update my post with these two, Incase anymore athletes stop by. Thank you so much for the question.

  2. Great post, our most common ‘go to’ toiletry products are loaded with harmful chemicals – raw shea butter is also supposed to have deodorising properties 😊

  3. Interesting…Lol now I want to switch my deodorant since It has a laundry list of ingredients. Do you have any suggestions for body wash?
