The Importance of Self Celebration.

Self Celebration.

Do you ever say to yourself “hey! You did well today! I am proud of you and I am going to take you to dinner?”

If you have, how did that feel? Did it feel better than when that same sentence was said to you by a loved one?

If you have never said that to yourself then I must say you are missing out on the opportunity; to be your own inspiration, to be enough for yourself, to show yourself true self-love, to take charge of your own happiness. But, there is good news. ALL that STOPS today. Henceforth, you will celebrate yourself.

The art of knowing yourself

A great religious teacher (Jiddu Krishnamurti) once wrote: “the more you know yourself the more clarity there is”.  Simply put, once you understand your likes and dislikes you will ultimately live a better life.

But knowing yourself is not a simple task. I for one find it hard to decide if I like blue more than black. Imagine how this simple thing can cause so much confusion. When I go shopping, I spend over an hour trying to decide between getting the blue dress or the black dress. It wasn’t until I took the time to figure it out that I realized, I actually like them both equally and I will be satisfied regardless of which one I get.

Now take another simple task and put in a partner.

Him/Her: Do you want anything to eat?

You: No, I am not hungry.

Your partner buys food, he starts eating and you are now reaching into his plate for a chicken wing. For some people, this is a very annoying habit.

Knowledge of self will allow you to say ” I am not hungry but I may take one of your chicken wings”. Your partner’s knowledge of self will allow them to say “I do not like when people do that so I will buy extra just in case you want some.”

Do you see how problems are created in our lives because we lack self-knowledge and sometimes knowledge about people that matter to us?
Having self-knowledge will clear up so many problems in your life. There is nothing wrong with sharing your likes and dislikes with people, once you know them. At the end of the day, your happiness matters just as much as theirs.

Turning that into Self Celebration

Once you have mastered the art of taking the time to know yourself you will begin celebrating yourself more.

By this point, you should know what success means to you. For me, success means reaching another year on earth, healthy relationships, and feeling good about whatever I do. In my opinion, I cannot be successful in a big house with no one to share it with. For you, this may be different.  Either way, self-knowledge will allow you to celebrate the things that matter to you. In doing that, you will find happiness.

Celebrating yourself will make you more grateful and more positive about your life. Acts of self celebration can be simple, for instance:

  • Give yourself some downtime
    • with self knowlege, you will know whether being overwhelmed causes you stress. If it does then stop putting yourself in an overwhelming situation. Give yourself some downtime. Step back and relax. You are no good to the team if you are frustrated.
  • Do something that makes you happy
  • Treat yourself to those healthy snacks you love
  • Buy yourself some flowers
  • Say kind words to yourself
  • Recognize that your achievements are YOUR achievements and they will and should mean more to you than to anyone else
  • Stop comparing yourself to others in a negative way. The only time clock you should live by is your own.
  • Come up with things that matter to you and do them.

Self-celebration is not self-praise, it is self-love.

Be proud of you first!
Thanks for reading and I hope you got some benefit from it. Until next time.
