Q- What do you love most about your natural hair?

I love the versatility of my natural hair more than anything!

Q- What does your natural hair mean to you?

For me, my natural hair means freedom to be who God created me to be and loving myself.

Share some advice for people considering to go natural.

For anyone that may be considering going natural, I say, DO IT! It’s not easy, but it’s a journey well worth taking because you’ll learn so much about yourself and your hair inside and out.

Reasons why you should go natural + Tips

Featuring Anne

Q- What is the state of your hair currently?

The state of my hair currently is short to mid-length, natural afro type 4b (or c) hair. The types are really confusing to me, but my hair is not soft at all and it has maximum shrinkage.

Q- When did you go natural and why?

Okay, this is the story. In March of 2017, I had not done anything with my hair for close to two months, I had a lot of new growth, my hair was untidy and I was having financial problems at that time. The truth is that I was actually depressed because of some delays in my life and my hair was just a reminder of my inadequacies. I had been telling my mom that I wanted to chop it off, but she kept saying no. So one day, I was fed up with the stress and the depression and so I just strolled to the neighborhood barber and told him to chop my hair all off.

Q- What do you love most about your natural hair?

I love that it is easy to manage, I can use natural products and get the best results without spending a bunch of money. I love that it’s the real me.

Q- What does your natural hair mean to you?

To me, it’s like a time lapse. I use it to measure how much time has passed in my life, and the things I’ve gone through. I see my hair as a form of acceptance. I see my hair as a metaphor for separating yourself from the things you cannot change and dealing with life how it is.

Share some advice for people considering to go natural.

For me, going natural was not just all about looks. It had to do with my life in general and what I was going through at that time. For those who want to go natural, see your hair as a journey. When you cut it, you come to the point where it is simple and one dimensional, but as it grows, it becomes more complex and gives room to more versatile styles. Remember to enjoy your hair. See it as a living organism and learn from it. (It sounds absurd. I know).

I can definitely relate to Anne as this was my dilemma when I went natural; at a low point in my life financially and my hair was a huge problem. I didn’t want to go naturally just yet, but I could literally no longer afford the maintenance and so was too depressed to keep up, so it got chopped. Five years and many interesting stories later I’ve learned to love my hair.
